Tidying Kendal
Nothing looks worse in a town than litter strewn streets and the Civic Society does it's best to identify blackspots and arrange for them to be cleaned up. Other visual intrusions such as graffiti, damaged street furniture, excessive signage and poorly maintained areas of the town have all come under consideration by the Civic Society with best efforts expended to reduce their effects.

‘Dolly Blue’ painting of a shop front in Finkle Street

Comment will also be made on the ‘Dolly Blue’ painting of a shop front in Finkle Street, from ground to roof height.  It was felt that this was too much for the centre of the Conservation Area, and should not set a precedent for similar outrages.

Disrepair of Buildings

The old Titus Wilson’s (Grade II Listed), and the Dower House Antiques in Kirkland are steadily rotting away.  The river-facing frontage of Home Base is also deteriorating.  These will be brought to the attention of the Planning Officer.

Sedbergh Road Sub Station

United Utilities have, for a second time in two years, responded to our request and have cleaned off all the graffiti, repainted the building and removed the redundant seating.  A great result, thank you United Utilities.

GROT SPOT

Substation 656270 Highgate, Kendal

This small substation just off Highgate is in a very scruffy state and, following their good work on the Sedbergh Road substation. We are hoping that United Utilities will improve this one, too.

We have also written to the owner of the patch of derelict land adjoining the substation, who replied immediately and positively.

He is developing three apartments above 47/51 Highgate and  intends to improve the area with a designated parking space, planting and a bin store. He welcomes our interest in the site. Work is due to start shortly and we will continue to monitor the situation

Entry Lane Rubbish Accumulates

Where it meets Stricklandgate Entry Lane is becoming ever more of an eyesore with parked cars, huge commercial bins and piles of cardboard, pallets and other waste from shops.  A letter to Eric Wright, the developers of Wainwright’s Yard produced a most sympathetic and helpful reply and it looked as though some effective action might at last be taken. However, in August there had still been no action taken top tidy the area up. The Society continue to follow this up as it is on an important historic thoroughfare from Fellside down into Kendal and is well used today. It must present a very bed impression of the Wainwrights Yard development and of the shops that make the mess!

OLD CHESTNUTS

We are still enguaged with our campaign against Large Wheelie Bins and Grafitti. These continue to blight our town and are an ever increasing eyesore that needs to be addressed.

Keeping Kendal Tidy

Keeping Kendal tidy is a matter of great importance to the Society, albeit one of lower profile than some other of our objectives. At times, however, it seems a losing battle and can be very demoralising. So much litter and associated rubbish accumulates in Kendal’s highways, byways and public places that its effects can blight the architectural and other delights of our town. Council members of the Civic Society are really concerned about this and the purpose here is to give an update on our ‘war on litter’ and to outline ways in which Society members can help.
