We were delighted to award the first Civic Society Design Award to Kendal College, for its outstanding conversion of a boring factory like building to an exciting modern College.

The assessors from the Society who visited the College were impressed from first entering the building by the care, passion and understanding that the principal, Graham Wilkinson, the architect Alan Simpson and his design team have shown, both in the internal layout and in the ivy clad screen which transforms the main block into a whole new exciting frontage. The result exemplifies all that the Society hopes to achieve with its Design Award Scheme: to encourage greater awareness of the need for good design, a respect for the scale and appearance of neighbouring properties and a high quality of construction and environmental management. The presentation of the award on 27th April was a very happy evening for all concerned. Susie Bagot, our President, presented the plaque to the Principal, Graham Wilkinson, who had been delighted to receive it. A guided tour of the splendidly refurbished College and a delicious buffet provided by catering students, had rounded off a very enjoyable and well-attended evening.
