Design Award

Design Award Plaque 2009

A Design Award was made to Kendal College by the Society early in April 2009.

This was the first award given by the Society and the selection comittee were extremely impressed by both the foresight of the Principal, Graham Wilkinson, and the execution by the architect, in transforming a bland featureless industrial building into an exiting, vibrant and forward looking project. Both the internal and external alterations have produced a building which whilst very modern in concept blends in beautifully with the historic aspects of Kendal.

Consideration was given to new buildings in Kendal erected within the last two years. Subsequent future awards will depend upon the number and quality of buildings erected in forthcoming years.

The criteria by which buildings are judged include:
  1. Schemes should be sympathetic to their surroundings and contribute to a sense of place.
  2. Buildings should show respect for the scale and image of the surrounding locality whilst not setting out to mimic historic forms.
  3. Buildings should demonstrate high quality in both design and environmental management.

The award consists of a framed plaque for the architect/designer and is accompanied by appropriate publicity through press, TV and on the web site. For the future the Society may seek partnership for this award with appropriate bodies such as Kendal Town Council and S.L.D.C., both of whom are very supportive.

Nominations for 2009/10 will be sought from members of the Civic Society Council commencing January 2010.
