St John Boste Social Club

Planning Application:St John Boste Social Club, Gillinggate:

The proposal to demolish the old Catholic school and replace it with a new building to house a medical centre, was discussed at length. The consensus eventually reached was that, whilst there would be little objection to the design on an empty site, we did not wish to see the mid-19th century school building disappear.

We would want to see efforts made to use the existing building to house the new facility, as was so successful with Home Base in the old bonded warehouse on Beezon Road, or with the transformation of the old Westmorland County Hospital into the attractive Summerhill Nursing Home. Castle Street school, the Kirkland schools and St. Thomas’s school have all been retained and found a new use when they became redundant as schools, and this school should be saved also. Kendal has lost too many historic buildings to the dreary offthe- peg rendered blocks for which any self-respecting architect should be ashamed.
