Plaques in 2010

The regular re-painting of the plaques goes on as and when it is needed.  The plaque on Nether Bridge has ben repainted now that the work in Kirkland is finished and the one on the Castle Dairy will be repainted after it is restored later this year.

A plaque to Paul Hogarth plaque is now in place on 28 Caroline Street. Paul Hogarth, born in Kendal, is one of its largely unrecognised sons, and his legacy should be remembered. Paul Hogarth’s work has been Exhibited at AbbotHall.

A plaque for Kirkbarrow Lane was unveiled at the official opening of the newly renovated Kirkland on 22nd June.

Two replacement plaques at Fisher Tarn Reservior were ‘opened’, on December 3rd, before representatives of United Utilities, the Civic Society and others interested. They replace one which was stolen and another that has been removed to safekeeping

The old circular painted plaque on Romney's House on Milnthorpe Road the house had not been replaced after recent redecoration and there had been some concern that it might 'disppear'.  After several letters sent to the owners it was eventually replaced in August, now painted in glorious colour.

Building restoration of Stricklandgate House has been completed and the scaffolding removed, to reveal the building looking its best.  The faded plaque on the wall however lets it down and it has been put on the programme of re-painting.

Kendal’s Dispensary and other research

Mr Nicholls has been digging in the archives for the history of the 'People's Dispensary', a service provided for the poor, from 1788 to 1854, in the building in Lowther Street later owned by Gawith Hoggarth.  This research came about after a chance remark on a Guided Walk, to find out why, how and by whom the Dispensary was run.  Mr Nicholls has also completed research into Kendal’s snuff trade and Stramongate School, both of which will be produced as booklets to add to our growing list of titles.

Helsfell Hall I

Grant-aided work on the old Helsfell Barn has now been completed and a new publication is in production with information on the history of the Hall and will include a watercolour of the Hall which Mr Bottomley painted in 1950.

The Society's Website

In March the Society's new Web-site was up and running as www.kendalcivicsociety.org.uk and the old web site removed.

It will provide a quick way of keeping members up to date with events and issues between newsletters and meetings, for those with internet access, and provides another means of contacting Council members through the contact email addresses published here.
