Guided Walks 2010 Report

Trevor Hughes and Pat Hovey had individually already taken many groups around the town - there seems to be no lessening in these walks’ popularity.

The 2010 Guided Walks programme for the public began on June 27th and ran through the summer, some very well attended including 36 on the 'Kendal Yards' walk led on that occasion by Jon Robinson (first time as leader) supported by Trevor and Patricia.

An Evening with Wainwright

On April 26th a lecture was held with free entrance for members, others were charged £2

Kendal Pattern Book 1769 - Exhibition

In January members of the ‘Lancs & Lakes Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers’ were weaving a replica of every pattern of cloth in the old sample book and made some of it into garments.

On 1st July there was an official presentation of the replica of the pattern book by the Guild ladies to the Mayor and some councillors.  All Civic Society Council members were invited. The garments made and the replica pattern book were displayed in an exhibition in the Library from 12th July – 5th September 2010 (and then then taken on tour around the country).

The amazing work replicated by the ladies from the Lancs. & Lakes Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, and the history boards and catalogue produced by some of the Civic Society Council Members (Martin Orrom, Arthur Nicholls, Trevor Hughes and Patricia Hovey), have made for a splendid and very professional Exhibition, and a fitting tribute to Kendal’s woollen history.

John Satchell Memorial Lecture 2010

This much anticipated event also had to be postponed from January 11th, because of the snow and ice.  All members were contacted by Mrs Hovey and Mr Wrathall went to the Shakespeare entrance to tell any who turned up – only four members of the public who fully understood. The lecture was re-arranged for September 20th at 7.30 pm, but the Society were informed three days before the intended date that he was in hospital in Scotland and therefore the lecture had, for the second time, to be postponed.  Mr Yates and Mrs Hovey went to let people know on the night.  Ivan Day was very distressed to have to cancel, but he promised to give us a date in 2011. Perhaps third time lucky!
