CHRISTMAS CARD 2009

Once again, Michael Bottomley kindly allowed the Society to use one of his paintings for our Christmas Card. This time it was a wintry view of Gulfs Road, painted in 1982. The cost for cards is as follows: Size A5 148mm x 210mm@ £0.50 (inc envelope). Size A6 148mm x 105mm@ £0.25 (inc envelope). There was also an A4 print on offer, also for £0.50. If you would like some they can be obtained from Patricia Hovey, our Hon. Sec., on 01539 720388.

Gulfs Road takes its name from The Gulfs which were a series of narrow passages connecting one yard to the next, providing an escape route from the flooding along the lower ends of the yards. The road was built to provide easier access to Braithwaite’s Mill and other commercial premises. In the centre is the yard owned by N. Greenbank & Co., scrap metal merchants and car dismantlers. Just beyond is the newly built Old People’s Welfare Centre. Dowkers Lane now cuts across between this and the buildings on Highgate. Edgecombe Court and a car park replace the scrap yard.
